Becoming more fully ourselves

Portrait of the author

For most of his life, Martin Turvey was busy doing.

Building a career.

Raising a family.

Leading organisations.

Serving in his church.

Meeting responsibilities.

Solving problems.

Like many people, he rarely stopped to ask who he was beneath the various roles and titles life had given him.

Then one day, as many of those responsibilities began to change, he found himself facing a simple question:

"What now?"

That question led to a personal manifesto, which eventually became a book, a framework and the beginnings of a community known as The Fourth Season.

Martin is not a therapist, life coach or academic. He is simply someone who has spent a lifetime learning, observing and reflecting on what makes for a meaningful life. Through Coming Home to Yourself, he invites others to do the same.

He believes that the later years of life are not a season of decline, but a season of choice. A season in which we have the opportunity to live with greater authenticity, greater intention and a deeper understanding of who we really are.

He continues to write, speak and learn, while enjoying time with his wife Debbie, his six children and sixteen grandchildren. Away from writing, he can often be found playing keyboards or guitar in a band, following the fortunes of Liverpool FC with unwavering optimism, and seeking out beaches wherever he travels. He has come to appreciate that some of life's richest moments are found not in achievement, but in family, friendship, music, conversation and watching the tide roll in.

Like the readers of this book, he is still finding his way home.
